What is a naming ceremony?
A humanist naming ceremony is a non-religious equivalent to a christening or baptism. You can also have a humanist naming ceremony for your adopted child or children.
It is a ritual to welcome your child or children into your circle of family and friends, embracing their presence in your lives.
What can you include in a naming ceremony?
As well as readings and music, you can include your family story. For example, from how your life was before your child arrived, to the seismic moment that you held them for the first time.
You can make promises to your child about your role as their parents.
You may introduce the special people you have chosen to be more closely involved in your child’s life. Some families call them godparents because it’s a term that everyone understands. Or you might choose a non-religious term, like guide or supporting parents.
As well as readings and music, you may also include a symbolic gesture. They often involve you, your parents, the guide parents and others. It’s your call.

How would my child be named?
We won’t stand around a font and anoint your child with water. In my humanist naming ceremonies, we simply say the child’s name together.

Pricing
As a humanist celebrant in London and the South of England, my 2026-27 fee for a naming or adoption ceremony starts at £350. It depends on the complexity and length of your ceremony, as well as your location. For example, I may charge for travel if your ceremony is located over 25 miles away from my office in TW2.
